FRED BROWN By: Frances M. McCrory-Meservy 1957-1974
After our Dad died, I never stopped looking for an earthly Dad. A friend and I even tried to match up our parents. Mittie and I figured if they got married, we would be sisters. It did not work.
When I was about 13, a man came by and introduced himself as Fred Brown. He wanted to buy our house. Mom wasn't home so I told him when she would be back. He told me he was interested in buying our home and I let him know it wasn't for sale.
A few days later, he came back and I answered the door. I told him he wasn't going to get our house but I would go get Mom for him. He talked to Mom and contracted to repair our roof. Somehow that turned into remodeling the house and romancing Mom.
He removed the tin from our roof and shingled it, enlarged the living room, put a really nice hardwood floor in, added a breezeway, and double garage.
When I was about 15, he asked Mom to marry him. I talked to my brothers and we decided to call him Dad so he would feel more at ease and welcome in our family.
The wedding was held at a friend's house. Immediately after the wedding, Mr. Brown hugged me and whispered, "I got the house." I still have a good laugh when I think about that. He was an excellent step-dad to us. I finally had a Dad again. He took care of us as if we were his own.
I donít recall having a cross-word with my new Dad. I was just thankful to my heavenly Father for providing one for me.
Fred Brown was the great love in my Mom's life. They had their ups and downs but oh how they loved each other. His greatest joy was to shower my Mom with expensive gifts. They meant little to her because she just wanted to be with him.
Our oldest, Stephanie loved her grandpa. She would sit for hours at the snack bar and talk to him. When he was dying, she would sit in his room next to his bed and talk to him as long as was permissible.
My brother Sam led him to Jesus in 1983 after he was bedridden.
He died in 1974 of emphysema. They had been married 15 years.
John 15:7 "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
