Mormon Church By: Frances M. McCrory-Meservy March 1978-May 1978
I started hearing rumors about how the Mormon Church was wrong. I decided to find out for myself. I read everything in the Church library about the history and teachings of the Mormon Church.
I spent time in the public library finding books written by people who had left the church and told why. I read secular history books about the church.
I went to hear the professors from Brigham Young University every night they were in town (10 days). I taped the meetings and (without comment) mailed the tapes to Al.
We attended Church every time the doors were open. After about three months, Al went out to sea for a one-month cruise.
The Sunday after he left, the teacher told us about D & C 132. If a man and a woman do everything the Church tells them to do and are sealed (married) in the Temple, when they die, they will be god and goddess. As god and goddess they would create their own world, have spirit children, populate their world and be god and goddess to the population.
It came in my head and out my mouth, "isn't that why Satan was kicked out of Heaven: because he wanted to be equal to God?"
You could have heard a pin drop. One of the Elders immediately took over the class and asked me were that was found in the Bible. I told him I thought it was in Isaiah but would find it and let him know next Sunday.
I had to read most of Isaih to find it; but, I did find it in
Isa 14:12-15 "How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.' Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.
I went back to class the next Sunday. The instructor, Elder and I were the only ones out of 35 people (the previous Sunday) to show up. I showed them Isaiah.
I decided I should read my Bible from front to back again. I highlighted every place in my Bible (King James bought at the Mormon bookstore) that contradicted the Mormon D & C with a blue pencil. You would not believe how blue my Bible is. The only contradiction I found in the Book of Mormon was that there was darkness on the face of the earth for three days when Jesus died. The Bible says three hours.
The day before the ship was to come in I realized I had to tell Al what I found out about the Mormon Church. I was very concerned. Al was a Baby Christian and I did not want to do or say anything that would damage his faith.
I prayed and asked Jesus what I should do. Jesus said,"if his faith is in me and not the church, it will make no difference."
Al and I were in the car on the way home and I was trying to figure out how to tell him about the Mormon Church.
He told me he was sorry he got us mixed up in the Mormon Church. It seems he was doing the same thing I had been doing. When we got home, we compared our Bibles and found that on each page the exact same verses were highlighted.
We were over a thousand miles apart and God had led us to the exact same conclusions. Our wonderful Lord is the only teacher we need if we would only listen.
We submitted a letter of resignation to the Mormon Church and started studying our Bibles carefully. We never wanted to be fooled again. If we knew the Book, we would recognize the truth when we heard it.
I had read the Bible several times; but I had never studied it. Al purchased a Strongís Concordance and we started an in depth study of the Bible that would last over 3 years. We went from subject studies to word studies and everything in between.
We felt God put us in the Mormon Church to teach us why we should know His word. The word of God is vital to our Christian growth and walk.
If anyone gives us an unscriptural testimony as proof that an organization is what it says, we will not believe them. Scripture always backs up a true testimony from God. If there is no scriptural basis, the testimony can be contradicted. A personís testimony should fulfill scripture. If it doesnít, something is wrong.
When I hear a scriptural testimony, the Holy Spirit floods my head with corresponding scripture. When I hear an unscriptural testimony, contradictory scripture fills my head.
If a church is of Jesus, they will use the word of God when talking to a person and a person will not be able to confound them with God's word.
Beware when a group declares they are the only true Church and if you donít join them you will go to hell; Or if you leave the Church you will go to hell. A person goes to hell for not trusting Jesus and for no other reason.
A righteous church will tell you to obey God instead of the church. They will teach people to walk in the Spirit instead of teaching them to follow a personís leading.
Church doctrine or a book written my a person in the church should never supersede the Bible in authority. A true church of God will teach people the Bible is Godís word and that they can understand and trust what God says. They will not tell them that the Bible is true as far as it is translated correctly or that only a Prophet in the church can understand what it says. They will encourage people to read the Bible for themselves.
Beware the group that throws Grace aside and say you have to obey the Law. The Law points to Jesus and the reason we need Grace. There is no salvation in the law. Godís love in us fulfills the law and in that we canít boast either because he put his love in us (thatís part of the Grace).
Al checked a book out of the library the told the doctrines of the main line Denominations. He decided that the Southern Baptist Church (I got my Church back) was closest to the truth.
We started attending Sunday School and worship services at London Bridge Baptist Church. We did not join because Al's enlistment was almost up and he wanted out of the Navy. We were going back to Texas.
The Navy had started allowing Satan Worshiping on the ship (It is their constitutional right-freedom of religion). There was Satan worshiping a few blocks from our house at a lake in the woods. One girl and several dogs had disappeared. A foreign company owned the forest and they would not allow anyone to clear out the brush so the lake would be exposed to the road. We felt it was not safe to stay.
Even though our budget was stretched to the limit, they were putting electric meters on each apartment in Navy Housing. Things were about to get tighter.

1 Tim 4:16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
2 Pet 2:1-2 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.
2 Tim 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
John 7:16-18 Jesus answered them and said, "My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. "If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. "He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.
Eph 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Rom 13:8-10 Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Rom 16:17-20 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
