Senior Citizenís League By: Frances M. McCrory-Meservy October 1978-August 1979

I was not working so I wanted to do something helpful for our community. I heard about the Senior Citizenís League and gave them a call to volunteer. They told me that they would call me 24 hours in advance to let me know who would need a ride to the doctor, hospital, grocery store, etc.

One call is very memorable. I was supposed to pick up two sisters and take them to the Doctor.

The couple turned out to be two really sweet ladies who sat next to me at the Non-denominational Church we had attended most of the year. I was really pleased to see them and how well they looked.

They were embarrassed to see me because their pastor taught them (along with the rest of the congregation) that admitting you were ill was a sign of a lack of faith. If you denied you were ill you would not get sick (paraphrased).

They told me that they denied they were sick until they passed out in church. An ambulance took them to the hospital where they were treated for double pneumonia. They felt like they had failed God.

I explained, "if God wanted us to deny we were ill, why did he tell us in his word that if one of us is sick, he/she should call for the elders of the church and they would anoint that person with oil and pray for him/her? The prayer of faith would heal him/her. He never intended us to lie to ourselves. He wanted us to ask Him to heal us. It was also Godís faith in the person who prayed that healed the person Ė not our faith."

I also explained that He sometimes supernaturally healed us and sometimes He did it through doctors. But he wanted us to consult Him first.

They no longer felt guilty Ė they were joyful instead. They realized that it is God who decides how and/or if someone will be healed. They just needed to consult Him.

James 5:14-15 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Eph 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Rom 8:33-34 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
