Explaining Gifts by: Frances M. McCrory-Meservy 1995

Lisa dropped by and wanted me to explain the Gifts.  I thought I knew what they were.  When I got to the word of knowledge, I started to explain to Lisa that a person with this gift would know something supernaturally about what was happening or going to happen.  I said I had the gift of the word of knowledge and that's how I knew things.  Jesus instantly corrected me.  Jesus said, "I tell you things because you are my friend."  I told Lisa that was wrong and I would have to research that gift.

I researched them all again.  Turned out the Gift of the word of knowledge - is to tell to someone something that has happened in their life or is happening now.  It's like the Holy Spirit takes over the conversation and you are just a microphone.  I've had this happen to me several times.  The gift usually comes with a word of wisdom also.  The two (jointly used) gives the person you are telling understanding.

The gifts God gave me (Missionary, Evangelism, Exhortation, Word of Knowledge, Word of Wisdom & Working Miracles) have examples attached.  The rest I can give an example; but it is not a personal one.

Friend - A person who loves you no matter what and you can tell them about anything and they will not leave you or condemn you.  A person who helps you wherever or in whatever you have a need.  A person who corrects you in private so you won't make a fool of yourself in public. A person who will debate with you and not get angry.  A person who likes to hang out with you and is comfortable even if there is nothing to say.  It's like love - hard to define.

Definition: one attached to another by affection or esteem; a favored companion;  to have a friendship or friendly relationship with

IE: Example - Jesus taught me a secret about walking in the Spirit while we were sailing in Galveston Bay.  He was with us there.

Friend

John 3:28-29 "You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but, 'I have been sent before Him.' "He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled.

James 2:23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God.

John 15:15 "No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.

A visiting Evangelist told the following (as best I can remember) to explain the Gifts.

Gifts in action:

A young lady is carrying a tray of food on one hand into the dinning area of the church.  She trips on a throw rug that was kicked up on one edge and the tray and it's contents spill onto the floor in front of her.  There is now a huge mess on the floor, broken glass everywhere and her left foot has a cut.

Gift of

Shepherding - told the Administrator that they should have a dinner for the visiting Evangelist (preacher and/or missionary

Administration - told leadership to plan the dinner and gave him the funding

Leadership - planned the dinner and Kitchen Ministry took care of the details

Serving - the person who was carrying the tray

Word of knowledge - tells her the carpet was kicked up and she tripped on it

Word of wisdom - tells her the carpet was unnecessary and should not have been there at all

Exhortation - tells her it was not her fault and only things were broken that can be replaced

Helps - several people jump up and start cleaning up the mess.

Teaching - tells her how to properly hold a tray so it won't happen again - even if she trips

Giving - donated enough money to replace all the broken dishes

Mercy - gave her a hug and told her she was forgiven

Faith - told her she could do it and everything would work better next time

Healings - one sits her down and stops the bleeding; another goes for bandages and another dresses her wound while another prays for God to heal her foot.

Prophecy To foretell an event that will happen in the future.

Tongues To supernaturally speak in a language that is not known to you.

Interpretation of tongues To supernaturally know what someone is saying in a language not known to you.

Working miracles To supernaturally change the natural order of things.  Unlike healing an ailment, working miracles can alter DNA or cause a bone to grow longer.  It can multiply food and call down fire from heaven (etc).

Apostle/Missionary/some believe only those who saw Jesus can be Apostles

Discerning of Spirits supernaturally know who or what is of God, what is of man and what is of Satan.

Artesian/carpenter/bricklayer/architect/seamstress/designer/artist/chief/baker/crafts/etc. (Many call these talents and not gifts - that's just a play on words)

Gifts

Rom 11:29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

Eph 4:8 Therefore He says: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men."

Heb 2:4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

Rom 12:4-8 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

1 Cor 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

1 Cor 12:4-12 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.

1 Cor 12:28-13:2 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way. Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

1 Cor 14:1-4 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

1 Cor 14:12-14 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel. Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
