Snacks

Sugar

Is an instant energy boost. That boost can instantly turn into a hypoglycemia attack (feel like you are starving to death, cold sweat, hands shaking, feel weak). Something with Protein in it that is eaten when or before you eat the sugar treat will help prevent the insulin spike. Sugar can lower your immune system, raise adrenaline, cause anxiety, hyper activity, difficulty concentrating & crankiness. It can cause tooth decay and contribute to obesity. There are plenty of snacks that donít contain sugar. My husband switched from soda with sugar in it to soda without sugar and lost 10 pounds in one week. Just remember a little sugar goes a long way and donít overdo.

Banana

And cereals, nutritional bars and snack mixes use dried banana pieces and powder or flakes. http://www.chiquita.com/

Bananas are the world's most popular fruit. The banana plant is not a tree. It is actually the world's largest herb! Besides being the best source of potassium it is also loaded with vitamin A for the large size. A full range of B vitamins are present with .07 mg of Thiamin, .15 mg of Riboflavin, .82 mg Niacin, .88 mg vitamin B6, and 29 mcg of Folic Acid. There are even 13.8 mg of vitamin C. Bananas help control or cure Anemia (high in Iron), Blood Pressure (high in potassium/reduces the risk of high blood pressure and stroke), boosts brain power (potassium packed fruit assists in learning by making people more alert), constipation (high in fiber), depression (contains Tryptophan/a protein that converts into serotonin), hangovers (a banana milkshake sweetened with honey calms the stomach, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, sooths and re-hydrates your system, heartburn (natural antacid), Morning Sickness (keeps blood sugar levels up so you can avoid morning sickness/When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband threw me a banana every morning before I got out of bed. If he didnít, I had morning sickness.), mosquito bites (rub the bite with the inside of the skin and it will reduce swelling and irritation), Nerves (high in B vitamins helps calm nerves), Stress (our metabolic rate rises reducing our potassium level. Replacing the potassium normalizes the heartbeat and sends oxygen to the brain and regulates our bodyís water balance. It also regulates blood sugar levels so we need fewer comfort foods that cause us to get fat), PMS (Vitamin B6 regulates blood glucose levels that affect mood), SAD (Tryptophan is a natural mood enhancer), quit smoking (High levels of Vitamin C, A1, B6 and B12, potassium and magnesium help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal), Ulcers (neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach), Wart (tape the banana skin over the wart). Temperature (lowers physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers.

Apple

The other favorite fruit.

A number of components in apples, most notably fiber and phytonutrients have been found in studies to lower blood cholesterol and improve bowel function, and may be associated with a reduced risk of ischemic heart disease, stroke, prostate cancer, type II diabetes and asthma. Preliminary research from Finland indicates diets with the highest intake of apple phytonutrients were associated with a 46 percent reduction in the incidence of lung cancer. Findings indicate that two apples a day or 12 ounces of 100% apple juice reduced the damaging effects of the "bad" LDL cholesterol. Adults who added two apples, or 12 ounces of 100% apple juice, to their daily diet demonstrated a significant slowing of the cholesterol oxidation process that leads to plaque build-up - thereby giving the body more time to rid itself of cholesterol before it can cause harm.  Research also suggests tannins (in apples) may help prevent periodontal or gum disease. http://www.bestapples.com/healthy/index.html
