It's the beginning of a new day in America.
I remember when I was in civics class in 1960, people were saying not to vote for Kennedy because the Pope would be running the country. Our teacher divided the class up and I debated for John F. Kennedy and another class mate debated for Richard Nixon. Our class voted before the debate (Nixon won) and after the debate (Kennedy won).
President Kennedy kept his promises and he and his brother Robert worked to bring equality to Blacks in America. The Pope did not run the country.
I could not cast a vote for JFK because he was killed before I was old enough to vote.
Obama reminds me a lot of JFK. I voted Democrat today for the first time in my life. And I just realized tonight that it was the actions of President Kennedy that made it possible for President-elect Obama to be where he is today.
I voted Republican in every election since 1962. Mainly in hopes that someone would reverse Roe V Wade. The Republican party was in the majority many of those years and not one bill was passed to change the abortion laws. They called themselves the moral right.
"We have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Why didn't someone write an amendment to the Constitution that defined "the right to life" as the right to be born? The Republican party have had many missed opportunities to do this over the past 30 years. All they did was keep appointing judges whose hands were tied unless an amendment was made.
I voted Democrat because every time I prayed about who to vote for the same scripture kept going through my head.
"All the nations will be gathered before
Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd
divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on
His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say
to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the
world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty
and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was
naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in
prison and you came to Me.' Then the righteous will answer Him,
saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or
thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and
take You in, or naked and clothe You. Or when did we see You
sick, or in prison, and come to You?' And the King will answer
and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it
to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'
"Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me. Then they also will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You? Then He will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me. And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
Traditionally the Democrats have been the ones who have programs to help the poor and needy among us. Over the past 20 years, the Republicans have removed most of the programs to help people and there are truly needy people among us who are losing all hope of getting the help they need. I believe the Democrats will reverse that trend.
At the same time it kept going through my head that the Republicans were misleading us and using Christians' moral desires to stay in office. We kept believing them although they did nothing about abortion.
What they did do was beef up big oil and take the regulations off Wall Street that were put in place after the "Great Depression" to prevent another disaster. We now have a disaster.
Our Republican heritage is a loss of respect in the world caused by the invasion of Iraq and financial disaster.
Congratulations President Obama & Vice President Biden. My prayers are with you as you try to correct the mistakes made over the past years.
I pray God will fill you with his Spirit and guide you every step you take. Amen
