MISSIONARY By: Frances M. McCrory-Meservy 1956

When I was thirteen, God called me to be a missionary. I got visions of headhunters in Africa and froze. God gave me a nudge and I went down the isle and accepted the call. I was scared to death.

I began taking girls home with me and seeing that they got a bath, their hair washed and clean clothes. My friends thought I was nuts and my Mom worried about me. I invited them to church and befriended them when no one else would. I gently taught them about Jesus and how much he loved them.

When I was sixteen, the church asked me to be camp counselor. We had about eight 10-year-old girls in our group. It was fun.

One night we heard a sermon about baptism and on the way back to the cabin I heard a girl crying. I found her sitting on a log sobbing. When I inquired as to what was wrong, she said she was crying because her Dad died and went to hell. I asked her why she thought that and she replied "because he was never baptized."

I asked her to tell me about her Dad. She explained that he was a soldier in WW II. He accepted Jesus on the front lines in Germany. He wrote her Mom and told her that he wanted to be baptized as soon as he got home. He died the day after he wrote the letter. He never had a chance to be baptized. The preacher had just said, "you go to hell if you don't get baptized."

I silently asked Jesus to give me the words to say to his child who was hurting. He did. I asked her if she remembered the thief on the cross who accepted Jesus just before he died. She did. I reminded her that he, like her Dad, did not have the opportunity to be baptized. Yet, Jesus said to him, "this day you will be with me in paradise."

I explained to her that her Dad did not have the opportunity to be baptized; but Jesus knew his heart and that is what counted. She went from tears to joy in a matter of seconds. I thanked Jesus for reminding me of his truth and we went on to our cabin.

I saw first hand how a wrong teaching could be harmful to God's children.

After that, if anyone (pastor or teacher) taught something that I had opposing scripture going through my head about it, I would talk to them after the services or class about what God was showing me.

1 Tim 4:16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

1 Tim 5:1 Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger as sisters with all purity.

Isa 58:6-11 "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh? Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, 'Here I am.' "If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday. The LORD will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

Luke 23:39-43 Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us. But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? "And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong." Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom. And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."
