THE WELL By: Frances M. McCrory-Meservy Summer of 1951

When I was about 7, Dad sold 15 acres and built us a nice house up on the hill. Except for the month that we lived in Kirbyville, TX. and the 3 months we lived in Pensacola, FL, we lived in that house until after all of us (children) left home.

Our home was three big bedrooms, kitchen/dinning room, living room and bathroom with a big front porch. We moved in before it was finished. It had beams and rafters exposed with sheets hung where doors should be. The bathroom was just a room with no fixtures and we still had an outdoor toilet. How we loved that house.

One thing was lacking. We needed a well for water. Mom & Dad dug two wells and found no water. I was walking around the back yard and all of a sudden, I could feel water running under my feet. I told Dad he should dig the well where I was standing and why.

He and Mom laughed and Dad said, "Why not, we have two dry holes so far."

They dug down about 25 feet, Mom stuck the shovel in and before she could get the dirt in the bucket, she was waist deep in water. They had hit a natural spring.

This period of time was toward the end of a 7-year draught. Our shallow well supplied our needs and several neighbors (who had deep wells that dried up) until the rains came.

We had plenty of the best water in the country as long as we lived there (about 21 years). The year after Mom sold the house and moved to Livingston, TX the well dried up.

After we moved in our new home, I started dreaming that my brother Sam (7 years younger than me) fell into the well and drowned.  The dream kept re-occurring, therefore I never let him out of my sight and never let him get close to the well until a year after the dreams stopped. He never fell in the well.

Psa. 114:7 - 115:1 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water. Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.
