Prophet - messenger of God who imparts God’s word to His people/revelation of Jesus/revivalist preacher– Called to the church, believers; Abraham was a prophet of God; Since God made Aaron Moses' prophet, a prophet is someone who is an agent or mouthpiece (speak for another) for someone else; God speaks to prophets in visions and dreams; people do not accept someone who has lived among them as a prophet even if he is one; Some people believe there are no longer prophets since Jesus' ascension but prophet named Agabus foretold what would happen to Paul after the assertion; there is also an admonition from Paul on how to identify a prophet; Jesus himself said that whoever receives a prophet received a prophet's reward; John, a prophet, wrote Revelations; Paul said to pray for the gift of prophecy; A prophet should prophesy in proportion to his/her faith; in conclusion I do believe there are still prophets among us. There are also false prophets among us. Be a fruit inspector - that's the only way to tell if the prophet is a Christian or not. Saul was completely out of God's will & was trying to kill David when God's Spirit came on him and he prophesied among the prophets (how God stopped him from finding David; Saul was not bearing the fruit of Love).
Definition: one who utters divinely inspired revelations; one gifted with more than ordinary spiritual and moral insight; a spiritual seer; one who foretells future events;
Example: A lot of people mistake the gift of "Word of Knowledge" for prophecy. Word of knowledge is telling someone what is going on now; Prophecy is telling someone what is going to happen tomorrow or years from now. They also have great understanding of God's word. Many years ago my husband was trying to tell a young man why he should repent. The man said, "I have no sin to repent of." Al said, "Because you say you have no sin, all your sins will be revealed within the next year." In less than a year the young man was in jail and all his sins were revealed. Thank God he repented and turned to Jesus. I believe my husband is a prophet - not because of this one incident but because or things that have happened over the past 30 years.
Prophet
1 Sam 19:20-24 Then Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. And when Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. Then Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is at Sechu. So he asked, and said, "Where are Samuel and David?" And someone said, "Indeed they are at Naioth in Ramah." So he went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. And he also stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"
Rom 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
Rom 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith;
Gen 20:7-9 "Now therefore, restore the man's wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours." So Abimelech rose early in the morning, called all his servants, and told all these things in their hearing; and the men were very much afraid. And Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, "What have you done to us? How have I offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done."
Exo 7:1 So the LORD said to Moses: "See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.
Deu 18:18-19 'I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. 'And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.
Deu 34:10 But since then there has not
arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to
face,
1 Sam 3:20 And all Israel from Dan to
Beersheba knew that Samuel had been established as a prophet of
the LORD.
1 Sam 9:9 (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he spoke thus: "Come, let us go to the seer"; for he who is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer.)
2 Sam 24:11 Now when David arose in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,
1 Ki 1:22 And just then, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
1 Ki 18:22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
2 Ki 20:11 So Isaiah the prophet cried out to the LORD, and He brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down on the sundial of Ahaz.
Jer 1:5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations."
Mat 10:41 "He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
Mat 13:57 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house."
Mark 6:4 But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house."
Acts 13:6 Now when they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus,
Acts 21:10-11 And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. When he had come to us, he took Paul's belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, 'So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.'"
1 Cor 14:37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.
1 John 1:8-9 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
